Searching for a used car is a wonderful way to find a budget-friendly vehicle. However, marketplaces are packed with people selling overpriced cars that are nothing but lemons. Knowing what to look for in a used car before shopping for a used car is important to avoid buyer's remorse.
1. Weird Noises
Listening for weird noises is essential. These are clues that something is wrong with the car. When test-driving the car, ensure the radio is turned down so you can hear noises. Listen for any pooping noises or other noises coming from the tires when you turn, and listen to the engine. If something sounds off, there's a good chance that something is off. Always keep this in mind when shopping for a used car.
2. A Lying Salesman
If the person you're purchasing the car from knew something was wrong and failed to mention it, that's a red flag. That means that there could be multiple things wrong with the car that you don't know about. Often, used car dealerships fix cars quickly and then sell them. According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, dealerships nationwide wrote over 316 million repair orders in 2017.
3. No Oil
Before test-driving the car, always pop the hood and check the fluids. If there is no oil in the car, it's a surefire sign of a leak somewhere. This also shows that the car's owner hasn't been properly maintaining it, and there could be more wrong with it.
4. Milky Transmission Fluid
Transmission fluid should be clear or reddish. If it's milky, it's a sign that the radiator has failed or is failing. Because of that, coolant has made its way into the transmission system. If you spot milky transmission fluid, the transmission system is about to go out.
5. Sketchy Title
A sketchy title is a sign of a sketchy salesman. If the title is not in their name, it's a red flag that they are flipping cars. A person buys cars quickly, jacks up the price, and sells them. Often, they don't own them or drive them long enough to know if anything is wrong with them.
If the mileage is off or the title has other discrepancies, that's another red flag. The same applies to a missing title. Walk away from these sales to ensure you don't get into a complicated situation.
6. Unusually Low Price
If the price is unbelievably low, there's more than likely a reason. The old adage, if things are too good to be true, they usually apply to prices and used cars. Keep an eye out for these things when shopping for a used car to avoid a lemon.
